Martha was the oldest child of Edward Dearing and Mary Sutton. She was listed with her parents in the 1841 and 1851 census of Okehampton, Devon, England. Martha was about 12 to 14 years old when her parents left England for America on a sailing vessel. She probably was given much of the responsibility in taking care of her brothers and sisters, being the oldest child. Martha met John Hiughes in Milton, Trafalgar township, Halton county, Ontario. This is also where she married in 1858. They were married by Robert Shanklin in the United Church of England and Ireland, Oakville. Witnesses were John Pellow of Palermo and Mary Dearing of Trafalgar. We find John and Martha in the 1870 census records of Elk Rapids, Michigan. John's vocation was blacksmith and Martha ran a boarding house. John and Martha lost many of their children at a young age. In 1874 Mary lost a son in childbirth. In 1877 John and Martha lost their daughter Barbara who died at the age of thirteen. In 1885 their only living son Christopher died and soon after Christopher's son died. In 1888 their daughter Mary died leaving two children and their daughter Nellie died of diphtheria. The trials were many, but one gets a picture of love from a land record recorded in the Antrim county records. John deeds a piece of land to his wife Martha for one dollar with reason stated on the record, "because I love her." Martha died in 1898 in Elk Rapids and her husband John died in 1904. They are both buried in Maple Gove Cemetery in Elk Rapids???.

It is reported that John Hughes deserted the family some time after 1880, after which Martha and her daughters ran the Hughes House hotel. John is buried in an unmarked grave in Norwood, MI. (This accounting differs with that posted above). The 1880 Census also indicates that John's parents came from Ireland.

Further research shows that this account may be true as Martha (Dearing) Hughes married David J Dokey in 1889.

The Hughes House was constructed in approximately 1868 by a local carpenter as a guest house, located on the stagecoach road between Traverse City and Petoskey.[2] In 1877, it was purchased by settlers John and Martha Hughes. They operated it until 1898, when their daughter, Alice Hughes Butler, inherited the house. She added the veranda and remodeled the interior into a family dwelling.[3] Alice Hughes Butler lived in the house for many years, and her daughter, Josephine Butler Cary, continued living there until at least 1980. The House was most recently purchased in July 2014 by Matthew and Anne Conrad of Elk Rapids as their permanent residence. Recent improvements include foundation re-support and insulation of the exterior walls.
