Hurst, a vice president and director of the Philadelphia Life Insurance Co., died early yesterday at his home, 351 Hawthorne Rd., Haddonfield, N.J., after a short illness. He was 57. He had been associated with the Philadelphia company for the last 17 years. Before his election as vice president, he was superintendent of agencies for 15 years. He entered the life insurance business 30 years ago as general agent for the Western Mutual Life Insurance Co. A native of Buchanan, Mich., Mr. Hurst was a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Actuarial Science, and was president of the Eastern Chapter of the university's Alumni Association. He is survived by his wife, Helen M. Hurst, and a son, Ervin, R. Hurst, Jr., recently discharged from the Army. Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M.
