    LAWRENCE -- John William Mackie Jr., 85, Lawrence, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at a Lawrence nursing home.

    Mr. Mackie was an officer and director of the Clemens Coal Co., the Mackie Clemens Fuel Co. and Buildex Inc., all in Pittsburg. He also served on the Pittsburg Zoning Board and Board of Appeals. He served five years in the Army during World War II and was discharged at the rank of major.

    He was born July 11, 1917, in Scammon, to John William Mackie Sr. and Clara Evelyn Bush Mackie. He graduated from Pittsburg High School and earned a degree in mechanical engineering at Purdue University.

    Mr. Mackie served on the Crawford County unit of the American Cancer Society, the board of directors of The First State Bank and Trust Co. of Pittsburg, and he was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Pittsburg.

    He married Mary Wipperman on May 29, 1943. She died in 1984. He married Florence Mulder on June 17, 1989. She survives.

    Other survivors include two sons, John W. Mackie III, Houston, and Andrew Mackie, Ottawa; a daughter, Allison Haworth, Lawrence; and six grandchildren.

    Mr. Mackie was cremated. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor Chapel. Later services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Pittsburg. Visitation will follow the services by Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence.

    Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Alzheimer's Association or the charity of the donor's choice and sent in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana, P.O. Box 1260, Lawrence, 66044.
